Shane T. Colby

Shane Colby was an inquisitive, bright, loving young man who left this world unexpectedly at the age of 21. Shane was well known for his incredible passion for the biodiversity of the rainforest and all oceanic life. He had countless exotic reptiles, amphibians, birds, and aquariums, and spent hours on end researching how to create the perfect ecosystems for his many pets. His favorite weekend activity was to gather friends to travel to exotic reptile shows.

Through endless self-study, Shane developed a keen awareness of the foundations of marine ecology and unique ocean ecosystems. He mastered the art of propagating stunning coral reefs, and knew how to maintain the perfect environmental balance.

Through his never ending projects, Shane became very aware of the sensitive equilibrium between living organisms and their environment. He was well versed on threats such as the onslaught of ocean pollution, deforestation, global warming, over-fishing, and the resulting endangered species.

The Shane T. Colby Foundation Fund is designed to honor and carry forth Shane’s passions. Our mission reflects his inquisitive spirit, his love of all creatures, and his sincere concern for others.

Our Mission

The study of ecology is crucial for human wellbeing and prosperity. It provides new knowledge of the interdependence between people and nature that is vital for food production, maintaining clean air and water, and sustaining biodiversity in an ever-changing environment.

The mission of the Shane T. Colby Foundation is to provide grants for initiatives that bring ecology-related wonders of the world to inquisitive young minds.

The value in ecology studies

Understanding ecology is important because it shows how changes in the environment affect the survival of living things. For example, when pollution kills certain living things, the animals that feed on them also may die. The work of ecologists has convinced many people to conserve and protect the environment and all the ecosystems that it supports.

Teaching children to respect and care for the world they live in will help to preserve it for the next generation. They will realize that everything we do as humans affects the world we live in; they will become advocates for protecting nature.
